Description We examined the sonochemical synthesis of CoFe2O4. Composite nanoscopic particles consisting of Co-Fe oxide particles and an organic matrix were prepared by sonolysis of mixtures of 2,4-pentanedionato complexes, M(acac)n, M = Fe, Co; n = 2, 3. The XRD results showed that phase pure CoFe2O4 samples were prepared with a molar content of Co:Fe from 1:1.3 to 1:2.0. Addition of variable amounts of water was found to facilitate the decomposition of precursor complexes. That allowed control of the organics content and the BET surface area of the oxide nanoparticles. Powders with specific surface area as high as 218 m2 g-1 were obtained. FE-SEM was used to examine particle shape, size, and size distribution with an estimated diameter of 20-30 nm. Variable temperature XRD also revealed the spinel crystallization on heating. A small particle size below 20 nm of the crystalline CoFe2O4 is retained up to 600 oC.
