Description Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is a common condition encountered in clinical practice. Catheter-based pH testing has several limitations, including issues of sensitivity, specifity, tolerability and the inability to record non-acid reflux events. When combined with pH monitoring, impedance monitoring enhances the detection and characterisation of GORD and may have a role in the evaluation of certain specific symptoms that persist despite acid supperssion therapy. This new diagnostic modality has advanced the uderstanding of GORD pathogenesis, but the impact on the clinical management of GORD is still the focus of active investigation.
