Description Several studies reported about problems that have children with animal classification. Especially younger children do not see differences between vertebrates and invertebrates whereby non-typical animals such as snakes or tortoises make problems with their classification. Here we examined childrens concept about penguins, a non-typical bird using some questions related to reproduction, morphology and, finally, definition, what anilmal penguin is. Our sample consisted from elementary schools children (N = 495) of all ages (6 to 15) from both urban and suburban schools. Written-type responses revealed that children of all ages have significant problems to identify penguin as bird; instead, we find that children thought that penguin give birth live young and its skin is covered by hair like mammals. Educational implications that would improve childrens problems with bird classification are discussed.
