Description This paper compares the legal regulation of the charges for municipal waste disposal in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. First, discusses the basic characteristics of the legal regulation in the Czech Republic. It points out that Czech municipalities can chose from three ways of charging for municipal waste collection. The paper then compares the Slovak and Czech regulation in three steps. In the first part, it describes who is liable to pay the charges. The Slovak legal regulation defines this more precisely. In the next step the paper discusses the methods used to set the charge. Advantages and disadvantages of each method are mentioned. The paper argues that the Slovak legal regulation gives the municipalities more options to choose the system which best meets their needs. In the third step the paper briefly discusses some aspects of the collection and exaction of charge.
