Description | Glorification of the youth and the increasing importance of the outer body together with the idealized notion of the femininity which is closely associated with the picture of young body can have serious implications for the experience of aging. Existing theories concerning women’s ageing thus often see women’s attitudes to their ageing body as problematical. This article is based on in-depth interviews with women aged sixty-five and older. Its aim is to outline the ways they conceptualized their experience of physical aging and to depict the relationship of these women to the visible physical manifestation of ageing. This study shows that increasing age gives women an opportunity to define their corporeity outside the dominant gender roles. In the connection with the ageing these women themselves created new criteria of desirable femininity characterized by a freer attitude toward their bodies. |
