Description Bisphosphonates have been used for treatment of bone resorption related diseases since the year 1980. These substances are analogues of pyrophosphates with the haracteristic chemical P-C-P bond. This chemical bond is very stable and it allows bonding of another molecules, thus acquiring important biological qualities. Bisphosphonates are available in parenteral and oral pharmaceutical forms. Using of bisphosphonates is a standard treatment in cancer with bone metastases, multiple myeloma, Paget's disease and osteoporosis. They are used in treatment of malignant hypercalcemia as well. In this review we attempt to compare various bisphosphonate forms to facilitate selection of bisphosphonates for oncological patients.
