Description We tested this hypothesis that GABA(A) receptors containing alpha 5 subunits mediate the rewarding effects of ethanol. Data obtained in a mouse model of ethanol self-administration show, that alpha 5 subunits may not be essential to signaling ethanol reward. Nevertheless, inverse agonists acting at alpha 5-containing receptors reduced ethanol self-administration.
