Description Roost selection in bats with respect to olfactory cluesThe first experiments concerning the importance of olfactory signals in roost selection in bats were conducted to refine the adopted method. The pilot experiments with the soprano pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pygmaeus) indicated that adult females are able to recognize the smell of conspecific roosts in relation to the smell of hetesocpecific roosts of the closely related species, the common bats (Pipistrellus pipistrellus). It seems that this discrimination ability is also displayed in relation to their own species. Contrary, juvenile females at the age of three months aren't perhaps capable of such discrimination. These results indicate, that females learn the discrimination ability later in their ontogeny. Bearing in mind the essential importance of roost selection for bats and only limited amount of knowledge about the mechanisms underlying this process, further reasearch is required and of prime importance for further conservation efforts in these species. The elucidation of the role of olfactoric signals and olfactory communication per se should take an important place in this research.
