Description In the history of linguists have been various opinion about what type of words participles are. Some linguistics have consider them to be an independent type. The majority view is however that participles represent attributive verbal forms that preserve the primary semantic qualities of verbs: action, aspect and voice. This is the view presented in the most recent academic grammar published in 1980.
