| Description | Current demographical trends are provoking important questions regarding the meanings and the position of old age in society. The idea of active aging and the concept of third age are prominent attempts to redefine the representation of aging. This paper focuses on the way these conceptions of aging influence the role of grandparenthood in the daily life of Czech women-seniors. Based on thirty in-depth interviews with women aged sixty and older, who actively participate in centers that offer leisure time activities for seniors, it analyze how they negotiate their role of grandmothers in the context of their active life-style. The paper points out the specific conception of grandparenthood that these women share in common. It stresses the ambivalent position of grandparenthood in lives of these active seniors that is interpreted in the context of the ways they relate to their previous life-biography and their current active life-style. |
