Description The estimations of a number of stand-alone psychotherapeutic models recognized by the scientific community varies between 200 and 250, though higher estimations have been made in a few sources. We have carefully monitored 1294 abstracts and hundreds of articles in prominent psychotherapy journals, as well as a number of essential books dedicated to the topic of current psychotherapy, and we have also taken into account the situation in several countries (e.g. Great Britain) as well as the attitude of the European Association for Psychotherapy. On the basis of these resources we present a list of those psychotherapeutic approaches that have been referred to as a self-contained psychotherapy in the journal articles, research papers, state-of-the-art reviews and political lists of psychotherapies mentioned. We have concluded that it is necessary to separate psychotherapeutic approaches on one hand from specific techniques on the other (considering both of them are often referred to as psychotherapies). This separation, however still does not seem to be sufficient as we discuss in our work.
