Description Active and passive tobacco smoking is shown to be among high-risk factors, which affect not only health of the smoker but, in pregnant women, also growth, development and condition of the fetus. The paper presents results of pilot research carried out among women of reproductive age. Pregnant women, as well as women who have not been pregnant yet were addressed using anonymous questionnaires. The aim was to determine what do women know about the harmful effects of smoking on human health generally and on the health of the fetus and how deep is their knowledge. It was also mapped whether the women smoked and, if so, whether they would stop smoking during pregnancy. Pregnant women were asked if they stopped smoking when they learned they were pregnant. The impact of education on rational assessment of the harmfulness of smoking, and the influence of the presence of a smoker living in the womans household (partner, parents, siblings) on their decisions about smoking were also investigated.
