Description Local action groups (LAGs) should have become one of the main actors of rural development in the EU. In the Czech Republic there are recently 112 LAGs in rural regions and many of them are very active and have realized successful projects. However, a lot of LAGs fumble with many problems – whether financial or inactiveness of potential members and administrative. And this is the space for knowledge and skills of geographers who think of region complexly and are able to contribute to their development. The aim of this articles it to analyse recent situation of LAGs in rural development, identification of their goals, activities and also barriers which hinder improving of conditions of life in rural areas though realisation of development projects. Also view of geographer on possibilities of development is included.
