Description If we, as biogeographers, attempt to document and understand spatial patterns of biological diversity, we need good data on which to base our quantitative research. The amount of such distribution data has rapidly increased over the last decades; in particular, grid cell monitoring seems to provide an appropriate data source for biogeographic studies. This paper aims to assess the possibilities of grid cell monitoring, which may not only be applied in distribution pattern analyses, but could also be used in community and species ecology research. Moreover, the paper presents several examples of studies using distributional data collected with grid cell monitoring in the Czech Republic.
