Description Autism is a complex, serious and biologically based disorder of the brain development. Its clinical picture involves characteristic social deficits, abnormalities in interpersonal communication, repetitive behavior and cognitive inflexibility. At present, it has been understood as a clinically and etiopathogeneticly extremely heterogenous spectrum of cognitive-behavioral and emotional symptoms with various expression of their severity. So far there exists no specific biochemical indicator or neuroanatomical abnormality by which it could be identified explicitly. The disorder diagnosis remains to be based on clinical and behavioral assessment and on ICD-10 criteria or DSM-IV classifications. Genetic, epigenetic as well as environmental factors play their roles in the disease etiopathogenesis. In spite of all the research contributions, the core symptoms remain non-affectable by pharmacology, therapeutical possibilities being limited to educational and cognitive-behavioral interventions.
