Description The purpose of this article is to discuss and analyse the African Union as an international organisation, whose aim is to contribute to the peace and security, and support the economic growth on the African continent. Firstly, the theory of international organisations is discussed and the circumstances of establishment of the African Union explained. Furthermore, an important attention is devoted above all to the analysis and comparison of the institutions of the African Union, because most of them, such as the Assembly, Executive Council, Pan-African Parliament or the Court of Justice are distinctly inspired by the organs of the European Union. Based on the analysis it is concluded that the institutions of the African Union precede the integration itself and thus the African Union will need to find its own way for the further development of the regional integration.
