Description This publication sums up the current state of information on the use of Moravian caves in the Middle Palaeolithic (250,000–40,000 years ago). As well as a critical revision of sources it features new techno-typological analyses of the stone industry from its primary sites: the Kůlna, Švédův stůl, Šipka and Čertova díra caves. Information about the products of stone-working is supplemented with a revision of the cultural classification of the excavated series, determination of the stone material used and a reconstruction of its distribution. These data provide a base for a synthesis centring on the behaviour of Neanderthal people. The economic interactions of Neanderthal society are analysed within the context of time and space, as well as their creation of site and settlement structures and the development of the techniques involved in stone artefacts. The author also devotes attention to non-utilitarian practices on the part of Neanderthal people, with special regard to possible art.
