Description Ectopically erupting maxillary permanent canines lead to displacement of the eruption line towards palatinal or buccal side. In the majority of cases there is also lack of space in the dental arch. After extraction of a deciduous canine and orthodontically achieved space for a permanent canine, a straightening and spontaneous eruption can occur. The phenomenon occurs mainly in buccally displaced canines. In the article the author presents a case of a 13-year-old female patient with a palatinally dislocated canine, with nearly finished root development which was not causing root resorption of the neighbouring permanent teeth. After opening the space in the dental arch by means of a fixed orthodontic apparatus, spontaneous eruption of the palatinal canine with regard to the dental arch ensued. Then the canine was aligned into the dental arch. The author also discusses diagnostic balance, therapy course, and the advantages and disadvantages of this procedure.
