Description The aim of this paper is to present the character of Charlemagne, during the last period of his life by using chansons de geste of known and unknown authors. This period of Charlemagne’s life, one of the most famous emperors, was remarkably depicted by a Czech author Julius Zeyer (1841-1901) in his masterpiece The Epic of Carolingian. The Czech poet respects the theme of chansons de geste, he expresses his admiration to the big spirit of these medieval texts that are carefully “modernized”. Zeyer became the only Czech author who presented thoughtfully and in a very original way a great number of chanson de geste concerning Charlemagne and his barons to the audience and who gathered these texts in his The Epic of Carolingian. This is a great tribute to medieval French literature whose importance in the history of literature in general should not be forgotten.
