Description We present prelimnary results from an ongoing international research project on the non-destructive evaluation of doubtful historic Czech trepanations. Four macroscopically supposed cases of skull trepanations from and early Medieval grave field (Pohansko, 800 AD) have been assessed by conventional X-ray and high-resolution helical computed tomography. A 24-30 year old male skull showed a healed trepanation of the left os parietale which has been especially supported by the used imaging techniques while three other individuals seem to have lesions of most likely peri- or post mortem nature. The article includes a brief overview about trepanation techniques and known cases of historic skull trepanations from the Czech region as well.
