Description Historically, the first networks of meteorological stations were often associated with the activities of various scientific and economic societies. In Bohemia, it was the I. R. Bohemian Patriotic-Economic Society that organised a network of meteorological stations and published the results of their observations from the years 1817 to 1847. Air pressure, air temperature, and precipitation were measured and wind and meteorological phenomena observed. Climatological analyses of these observations have now been carried out on the basis of homogenised monthly series and the results compared with the 1961–1990 reference period. The 1817–1847 period may be characterised as cooler and wetter in comparison with the reference period. Selected temperature and precipitation anomalies occurring in the former period are also briefly described. The analysis of these meteorological observations extends our knowledge of spatial and temporal climate variability in Bohemia during the 1817–1847 period, previously limited to only a few stations (mainly Prague-Klementinum). Some of the Society stations continued observations as part of the network of the Central Institute for Meteorology and Earth Magnetism established in Vienna in 1851.
