Description I believe that social work as one of the modern professions is facing a serious problem. In the context of questioning the institutions of the welfare state and its ideological essence, is also challenged social work as a profession, which had been created during the development of the welfare state (see for example the idea of social citizenship). Social work as a professional project was defined by two pillars - (1) institutional framework (welfare state) and (2) emerging theoretical apparatus (base of professional legitimacy). The institutional framework of social work was in the contemporary world (neo-liberal thinking) challenged, and social work cannot be sure even its own theories. Academics in the field acknowledge that the spectrum of theories is very broad, some social workers in practice argue that the theory is "an academic luxury", which they cannot afford. In addition, there is a more general discussion of whether social work is to be understood as the application of scientific research and evidence-based practice, or whether it is rather an activity that is an expression of artistic, political and value nature. The article deals with the fate of theoretical thinking in social work in contemporary society.
