Description In recent years, changed climatic conditions in the Arctic region has opened the door for a new types of strategic and security policy opportunities and challenges. Therefore it has rapidly increased international attention to this region and the Arctic is seen as possible major energy province. Consequences of the ice melting underline possibility of the opening up of a new transport routes from Europe to Asia and America, and considerable economic potential with mainly oil and gas exploration. The Arctic is a territory of low, but potentially increasing political tension. Individual Arctic states declared their particular interests in the region and adopted number of strategies, declarations and agreements. These documents mostly cover civilian fields of international relations such as economy, development, transportation, governance and protection of environmental and human life, and international cooperation. These interests are manifested not only by Arctic states, but also a range of actors including “non-arctic” powers.
