Description The study attempts to summarise existing knowledge about a specific type of single-edged medieval weapons, generally known as hunting knives with cymbiform guards. Weapons of this kind are published in the article for the first time. Starting from this type of knife, a simple typology of guards has been devised, based upon the shape of the body. The study also discusses flat and asymmetrical heads decorated with inserted stars and rosettes, previously exclusively associated with hunting knives with cymbiform (boat-shaped and keeled) guards, a fact that appears erroneous in the light of the collated information. Decorated heads were also used in the design of weapons that were typologically completely different. Comparison of find circumstances of the individual examples and iconographic sources help date the type of hunting knives analysed to the second half of the 15th century.
