The project will make use of large phytosociological database and recently developed computer-based methods of formalized vegetation classification for making a survey of the semi-natural grasslands of the Czech Republic. The main classification algorithm will be COCKTAIL (Bruelheide 1995), as implemented in software package JUICE (Tichy 2001). This approach will yield a classification which has clearly defined classification criteria and is close to the traditional phytosociological approach. The numerical classification will be supervised by experts in order to achieve a compromise between formal definition and practical applicability of the vegetation units. Vegetation units distinguished will be parametrized by the values of measured environmental variables, indicator values and using GIS overlays.
