The aim of the project is to synthesise Fe-based nanoparticles using the microwave plasma and characterisation of these nanoparticles. The properties of the nanoparticles will be optimised for use in new magnetic materials and for catalysis of carbon nanotubes growth. We will use the microwave plasma in two configurations, in which the plasma properties differ substantially: (a) surface wave discharge at reduced pressure ~1 kPa and (b) microwave plasma torch operating at atmospheric pressure. The vapours of iron containing organic compounds (e.g. iron pentacarbonyl) will be used as a source of iron. As iron particles tend to oxidise in contact with atmosphere, they will be passivated. The prepared nanoparticles will be investigated by methods of structural and morphological analysis. Further, their functional properties, namely their catalytic ability and magnetic properties at low and high temperature will be evaluated. The nanoparticle properties will be corelated with the plasma parameters determined by plasma diagnostics, mainly optical emission spectroscopy. The results of microwave plasma synthesis of iron based nanoparticles will be evaluated from the point of view of larger scale nanopowder preparation.
