Knowledge-based societies are underpinned by solid capacities on Intellectual Property (IP) management, collaborative research, and innovation, which is the very engine behind current and forthcoming scenarios for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Over the last two decades, in particular, regional and national policies have been asking universities to thoughtfully integrate IP and knowledge transfer into their mission and objectives for being able to respond to global socioeconomic challenges and demands. Within this framework, coherent IP institutional policies, contract and applied research, commercialisation of results, and university-industry collaborations of different types try to make their way amongst universities’ traditional activities. This is not an easy task for HEIs, which need now more than ever consistent IP policies and protocols, well-planned infrastructures and services (‘one-stop shop’ for the university community and local entrepreneurial tissues), and well-trained staff able to provide professional counsel.
