The genus Boechera (Brassicaceae), which is closely related to the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, comprises c. 110 species distributed mainly in North America. The genus is characterized by a basic chromosome number of x = 7 and includes diploid sexuals (2n = 14), as well as diploid (2n = 14, 15) and triploid (2n = 21, 22) apomicts. Extensive morphological variation of the genus is a consequence of frequent hybridization among diploid species resulting in the origin of apomictic diploid hybrids. Triploids have arisen multiple times through hybridization between sexual and apomictic diploids. Two heterochromatic B-like chromosomes (Het and Del) have been described in apomictic Boechera plants. The proposed project aims to investigate genome structure and evolution of sexual and apomictic Boechera plants, elucidate the origins of apomixis-associated chromosomes and uncover the cytogenetic basis of apomixis in Boechera. A combination of state-of-the-art cytogenomics and phylogenomics approaches will be used to reach these goals.
