Partnership formation is closely connected to the educational structure. While the educational
expansion in developed countries contributed to delayed marriage and expansion of
cohabitations, the reversal of the gender gap in education has transformed the structure of
mating markets. This change has significant consequences mainly for highly educated women
and low educated men, whose mating prospects are worsening due to the shortage of equally
educated potential partners. In this project, we focus on partnership intentions, strategies, and
situations of highly educated women in the time of gendered educational expansion. We will
investigate how do highly educated women differ in their intentions and attitudes toward
cohabitation and marriage, partnership transitions, and the organization of the household.
These topics will be examined through a secondary data analysis using national household
panel surveys and the international Generations and Gender Survey. The comparative part of
the analysis will show if and how the studied associations vary between countries and over
time.
