The provision of transport services can be organized on competitive or planned principles. The competitive approach contains both intermodal competition among transport modes and intramodal competition among transport operators. The competitive approach has many advantages, including downward pressure on prices, increased Innovation, and dynamics in the industry. On the other hand, it also has some drawbacks, such as diminished economies of density, thin markets, and lost integration. The project analyses whether competition or planning is the most effective in delivering transport services.
