The struggle of indigenous peoples in Brazil for the recognition of civil rights, currently highly publicized, has been gaining momentum for more than half a century. The introduction of a legal definition of the status of indigenous peoples in the 1988 constitution made their critical living conditions, including demographic decline, more visible, and at the national level strengthened their struggle for the recognition of their own culture, identity and territory. While the initial demands were political and social in nature, the later ones focus on cultural emancipation and representation.
Our project focuses on literary works written by Indigenous authors since the 1990s and other cultural expressions of Indigenous communities. It is an interdisciplinary research that will primarily include literary, philosophical, and cultural studies perspectives.
