With the current epidemiological and demographic trends and chronic diseases such as cancer, dementia
or heart failure being the main cause of deaths, the ability to communicate effectively about future health
care options for patients and their families is crucial and research in this area has been repeatedly
identified as one of the international priorities for future research by both clinicians and patients
In this proposal, I would like to set up a new research programme at the Faculty of Medicine at Masaryk
University, that would explore potential solutions for the problems described above by addressing three
specific research questions:
1) What are the key turning points in the development of patients’ prognostic awareness and illness
expectations?
2) How can AI help with communication about serious news and advance care planning in patients with
advanced incurable disease?
3) What are the psychological and ethical implications of using artificial intelligence in communicating
serious news to patients with advanced illness?
