This research aims to study border effects in European passenger transport. The border effect measures how much the trade or traffic flows are diminished when crossing borders or, more simply, how traffic is reduced due to the presence of a border. These effects are a critical research issue for many scholars, predominantly in the field of trade. However, border effects in transport are rarely examined, especially in passenger traffic. There are many methods to capture border effects. The primary method under consideration is the gravity model, which can be used to analyse the various determinants of the border effect. The study of border effects fills a particular research gap by applying unique data sources on air and rail transport in Europe. It provides a basis for a broader discussion within economic policy, mainly focusing on EU transport policy.
