STORE-1PLUSMG will be an important infrastructure project conceived to accelerate the operationalisation of the 1+MG Initiative, a landmark multi-country project signed by 27 European countries that is to be implemented through the Genome EDIC as its incorporation. At its core, the project will pursue the procurement and deployment of federated, foundational and secure storage and pre-processing capacity required by the Genome EDIC to ingest, manage, and scale access to curated genomic data, while ensuring the long-term preservation of datasets produced under major EU and national sequencing programmes, such as the Genome of Europe project.
The project will pursue four objectives: 1) defining a scalable and cost-effective data storage and pre-processing strategy covering architectures, technologies, and legal considerations for a federated genomic ecosystem; 2) implementing a coordinated national procurement framework enabling countries to acquire production-grade infrastructure under harmonised business and technical requirements; 3) ensuring compliant deployment and validation of procured infrastructures, including integration with Secure Processing Environments and alignment with the European Health Data Space Regulation; 4) strengthening long-term sustainability and federated governance and its integration to the operation of the Genome EDIC by supporting national readiness and infrastructure management planning.
Building on the foundations of current and past 1+MG related projects such as GDI, B1MG and B1MGplus, as well as linking to data related projects like the Genome of Europe (GoE) to enable sustainability through the Genome EDIC, STORE-1PLUSMG will enable cross-border secondary use of genomic data at scale, directly supporting Digital Decade Policy Programme targets and reinforcing European competitiveness in personalised medicine.
