The Mediation in Developing Dynamic Language Education (MIDDLE) project aims to support a shift to a flexible, mediation-informed LE in which learners develop the intercultural awareness, responsibility, and agency needed to discuss delicate issues, challenge stereotypical views, appreciate diverse perspectives, and work collaboratively with people from other backgrounds, all while improving language proficiency. To achieve this goal, we will: 1) leverage partners’ expertise to develop teachers’ knowledge of mediation and ability to implement it; 2) investigate the extent to which mediation promotes learners’ awareness, responsibility and agency; and 3) advance scholarly knowledge on mediation, its educational potential and pedagogical feasibility.
