Description The paper deals with the history of teaching Serbian language at Masaryk University in Brno. Serbian language was taught initially under the name Serbo-Croatian because of the conception of the common language of Serbs, Croatians, Montenegrins and Muslims. The independent study of Serbian language and literature began in the academic 1997/1998. Thanks to that fact Brno is one of the few European cities where there is independent Serbian studies and independent Croatian studies. Since academic 2003/2004 the study of Serbian language is offered also in the new specialization – Balkan studies, and it is also regularly taught as elective subject for students from other specializations during 2 or 4 semesters.
