Citation
Description Pedagogical content knowledge is a component of teachers‘ knowledge base that allow the teacher to deliver the content of education in a way that it remains correct from the perspective of the particular field and at the same time carries the potential to accommodate to individual pupils. In this chapter, pedagogical content knowledge is seen as a component of teachers’ professional knowledge base; the author explains that it is pedagogical content knowledge that distinguishes the teacher of a particular school subject from a specialist in the particular field. He provides a historical overview of how the ideas concerning interconnecting the content with didactics – i.e. the ideas of pedagogical content knowledge or field didactics – developed in the North American as well as European traditions. Building on findings of empirical research, the author analyses the specific nature of pedagogical content knowledge and the conditions in which is develops. Towards the end, attention is paid to issues of teacher education curriculum and the role that field didactics plays in teacher education.
