Description Background: The presentation deals with the knowledge and observance of effective forms of primary prevention of lower extremity varices in general public of the Czech Republic. The first goal was to find out the degree of knowledge of varices of lower extremities, particularly the knowledge of preventive procedures; the second goal was to find out the respondents` subjective perception of varices development. Methods: In the investigation, the target group consisted of women with no health care education at the age between 18 and 45 years (women suffering from varices were not included in the investigation). The data were collected by means of anonymous questionnaires (24 items). The results are given in absolute (n) and relative (%) frequencies. Results: The respondents were women (n= 115) at the age between 19 and 45 years, the average age being 34.7. 60.8% of the respondents had encountered varices of lower extremities in their environment. The disease was correctly characterized by 50.4% respondents. The typical signs were correctly given in 88.7% responses and the risk factors were correctly stated in 45.2% responses. Protective factors were correctly mentioned in 94.5% responses and practical preventive procedures in 99.5% responses. 61.7% respondents mentioned that they were afraid of the development of varices of lower extremities. Conclusion: The investigation presented makes readers acquainted with the general public awareness of prevention and observance of the rules of prevention. The persons tested are women in productive age. Shortcomings clearly result from the investigation -these particularly relate to the knowledge of the concept of varices of lower extremities (they are referred to as varicose veins in the questionnaire) and the causes of the origin of the disease. As a positive factor, the knowledge of practical elements of primary prevention can be regarded.
