Description Background: Venepunction and insertion of peripheral venous catheters belong to essential skills of general nurses. The contribution covers the area of the peripheral venous catheters based on prospective monitoring which was realized in 2011 at University Hospital Olomouc. Methods: The prospective monitoring study was realized in 2011 at University Hospital Olomouc. It surveys 49,310 peripheral venous catheters which were placed to the patients at University Hospital Olomouc in the monitoring period. The survey provides data about used peripheral venous catheters on 28 inpatient departments at University Hospital Olomouc. It summarizes data of peripheral venous catheters versus age and sex of patients with, type of catheter, Maddon Criteria for judging phlebitis, peripheral venous access localisation and the duration of catheter placement. Results: The subject peripheral venous cannulas (n = 49310) were reported for patients aged from 0 to 101 years, with the average age of 53.7 years. The peripheral venous cannulas were given more frequently to men (n = 25 828; 52.4 %) and 4 % less frequently to women (n = 23 482; 47.6 %). The incision point localization was evaluated as significantly related to the age of the patients. The occurrence of complications of the peripheral venous cannulas was more frequent in case of men than in case of women. Occurrence of complications in time was evaluated as statistically significant - increasing time of inserting was associated with increasing number of complications. Conclusion: Occurrence of complications with the inserted cannulas can be assessed as not too high and we have to appreciate the efforts of the professional care providers to eliminate the cannula associated risks also with respect to appropriate localization of the incision point and on observation of signs of complications.
