Description This text focuses on the relationships between Czechoslovak Television (CST) and Czechoslovak State Cinematography (CSF) in the field of feature films distribution during the first twelve years Czechoslovak Television existed. In the 1953, CST started public broadcasting and as early as 1964 reached the legislative status of a fully established cultural institution. In the time of its beginnings, television represented new and attractive technology which could reach its audience very fast. But launching TV broadcasting in Czechoslovakia during the fifties brought a number of problems. Establishing the whole network, studios, transmitters and TV sets required creating a brand new institution in the public sphere. The creation of this new organization then brought numerous problems caused by interaction with the older and already established public and cultural institutions. From its beginnings, CST and CSF were tied in the closest relation which was supposed to help CST develop broadcasting by providing it with a material and technological background. Because CST was poorly technically and materially equipped during the first years and its staff had no experience with the broadcasting at all, the major part of TV broadcasting consisted of showing cinematographic feature films. But broadcasting films through TV also meant that movies could be easily watched from the comfort of every living room and viewers therefore had no reason to go to the cinema to watch these movies. Thus, both organizations found themselves suddenly in competition for audience. For those reasons, this thesis is focused on a series of contracts in which CSF annually declared the conditions under which cinematographic films could be shown by CST on TV screen. The thesis tries to describe how these relationships operated and developed during the establishing process of CST in the former socialistic Czechoslovakia.
