Description This thesis is focused on visualization of 3D city models in web browsers. Theoretical part consists of an analysis of cartographic principles for 3D visualization of spatial data and survey methods and review of methods and technologies used in the design and visualization of 3D models. Emphasis is placed on web technologies. Typologies of existing city models and their applications have been prepared, too. In the scope of practical part the requirements analysis has been compiled, available 3D web technologies have been compared and tested on the basis of this analysis. X3DOM library has been chosen for the implementation of custom web application. Web application displays two variants of the 3D model of Brno’s city district Nový Lískovec using X3DOM technology. The first version shows the noise pollution, the second variant contains realistic textures. Description of data processing and implementation of application functionality is part of this thesis. Attention was paid to the areas important for the practical deployment of X3DOM in cartographic visualization (data compression, storage of attribute information and utilization of web services). Advantages and disadvantages of X3DOM library and 3D visualization of spatial data generally are discussed in the conclusion. Opportunities of future development are also outlined.
