Citation
Description The chapter provides a critical overview of the promises of and challenges to democratisation of established democratic regimes, as conceptualised in contemporary theories and models of democracy. The text focuses on three "fundamental questions" of democratic theory, i.e. the delineation of a democratic people; defensibility of the majority principle in decision-making; and the desirability of democratic rule as such. The background to the chapter's argumentation is provided by the fact of deep pluralism in democratic theory.
