Description Production of illustrated histories developed on the court of the Ottoman sultans in the 16th century, the period of cultural and artistic florescence of the Ottoman Empire, and brought the emphasis on the documentary function of the Ottoman miniature painting. These histories depict mainly the history of the Empire, glorify the sultan, his campaigns and political decisions. As in the period, however, political interactions with European countries were extensive, many of the mentioned events were crucial also from the perspective of European history. The Ottoman miniatures illustrate them, portraying the Europeans, their armies, their towns. What were we like in the eye of the Ottoman painters?
