Description Insect was in the 60´ of 20th century the first animal model for early studies of magnetoreception. First, there were bees and their waggle dances followed by tests of monarch butterflies, drosophila and many other species. Despite of 60 years of research, the basic question remains the same - how does magnetorecetion work? After theory of magnetic particles working as a compas needle, competitive radical pair theory appeared. This theory is based on photosensitive molecule cryptochrome reacting to magnetic field. However, we still don´t know how does the magnetoreceptor work, neither where is localized in insect body. In some species, we don´t even know, what advantages for its owner magnetoreception provides. Despite these facts, it is possible that insect model will be the one explaining molecular basis of animal magnetoreception. The lecture briefly introduce history and new findings in insect compass sense and summerize the role of czech workplaces.
