Description After 1989, widespread social and economic changes have occurred in Central and Eastern Europe, which among other things meant a change in individual regions, cities and municipalities. The paper deals with the phenomenon of ‘shrinking cities‘, i.e. the seats which significantly decreases the number of inhabitants and they are so gradually depopulated and lose their fiction. The text aims to focus on this issue in the context of the Czech Republic, identify shrinking cities on its territory and to classify them. File of 111 cities was determined by quantitative analysis of the data and further categorized according to several aspects and indicators (short-term x long-term shrinking, only shrinking of cities x shrinking of cities and hinterland, natural change x migration etc.). The result is a typology of shrinking cities in the Czech Republic, which leads to a better understanding of the causes and consequences of this unfavourable process.
