| Description | The early period after allogeneic stem cell transplantation before engraftment (preengraftment) is characterized by a high risk of developing opportunistic infections, mainly due to prolonged and profound granulocytopenia. 80% of patients with very severe granulocytopenia lasting longer than 10 days, develop a fever and infectious complications. Localization of the infection can not be identified in more than 50% of febrile episodes, and we talk about febrile neutropenia. Early diagnosis and initiation of antimicrobial therapy significantly reduces morbidity and mortality of patients. |
