Description The article addresses the issue of the genesis and significance of borders on the Moravian-Austrian frontier in the Early Middle Ages, summarising existing knowledge on the subject using historical and archaeological sources. Based on the most recent excavations on Palace Hill (Zámecký vrch) in Mikulov, the study then puts Mikulov and its princely castle from the Late Hillfort period into new contexts. The study presents the results of the most recent excavations on the grounds of the château which, according to an analysis of the new collection of pottery, dendrochronological dates and stratigraphic relationships, shed light on questions regarding the historical beginnings of Mikulov and its castle. The study also addresses the role and standing of the princely castle in Mikulov in relation to the emerging border line between the Bavarian Eastern March and the Přemyslid principality.
