Citation
Description 6th interdisciplinary urban studies conference plays with the metaphor of in/visibility, referring to Italo Calvino's book. This metaphor suggests that one place can be observed in many different ways, mapping various aspects. The observing actor may be an everyday user of the city or an expert who is planning or studying the city (to refer to Michel de Certeau's distinction between the view from above and from below). Perspectives that actors use vary and can be in conflict. The metaphor of in/visibility therefore serves to point out that some of he ways of living in the city, of observing it and representing it, are more visible than others. This is obvious in political discourse, in the expert field of urban studies, and in the seemingly dominant ways of using the city.
