Description In 378 AD, Roman troops headed personally by the Emperor Valens encountered near Adrianople the army of Germanic and the other refugees and suffered the crushing defeat. But what were the causes of the Roman failure? How could supposedly unarmed and hungry barbarians defeat the elite Legiones Palatinae? Did the Emperor Valens and his commanders make fundamental mistakes? Or did the barbaric commanders find some effective tactics against the Roman legions? Were the Goths great warriors or did they attack at the right moment in the right place? The following text finds answers on these and other particular questions on the basis of the detailed analysis both of primary sources and theories published by modern authors.
