Description In educational sciences, we often seek to determine the effectiveness of an intervention (e.g., the effectiveness of the use of a particular teaching procedure, the teaching aids chosen, or the adaptation of the learning environment). Experimentation is one of the classical ways of verifying the effect of our actions. However, meeting some of the conditions required by traditional (between-subjects) experimental designs may be unattainable for the researcher or this type of experiment may be completely inappropriate for the chosen research topic. Since the 1960s, psychology, education, and social work have developed experimental procedures that do not require large numbers of participants or the random selection and allocation of participants into experimental and control groups. We can even make do with only one research participant. In this presentation we will introduce the basic logic, procedures and possibilities of using the so-called Single Case Experimental Design in educational research.
